1967. The Summer of Love. The year of groundbreaking albums like "Surrealistic Pillow", "The Velvet Underground & Nico", "Their Satanic Majesties Request" and of course "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band“. Music to liberate millions of young people from the bondage of bourgeoisie, to bring the most powerful hi-fi speakers to their knees and turn the history of rock music upside down. It’s 1967, and the world is no longer as it was before.

Meanwhile in Austria. Oompah oompah marching bands, bawdy folk songs, shallow Schlager and bland dance bands wearing even blander suits characterize the sound of the time. Only a few young avant-gardists are dedicated to beat and rock-n-roll music. And even fewer devotees manage to step out of obscurity and onto larger stages or even into a recording studio.

In 1967, THE BEATNIKS, who saw the light of day in rural Carinthia, have already made themselves a name in Vienna for being the pioneers of the Austrian beat movement. Starting in the early 60s, the six-piece combo soon acquired an excellent reputation as Vienna’s number one live band and has played a good 1000 gigs. Being the house band in some of Vienna’s hottest clubs and numerous Austrian tours consolidate the fame of the group. THE BEATNIKS are considered the biggest alpine beat band, even beyond the country's borders. "That's not what THE BEATNIKS say. That's what the connoisseurs say" states the German pop magazine BRAVO laconically.

In 1966, after a few very successful singles, bandleader Werner Marinell succeeded in negotiating a contract with the major record company Polydor to record a long-player with the bands own material. A real sensation, considering Austrias popcultural backwardness at that time.

But what the band does with this opportunity surpasses all expectations. Despite enormous time pressure and a ridiculously low budget, the six young musicians bang out a formidable freakbeat grenade in just two days.

However, the album "On A Blue Day" unfortunately does not become a bestseller and is today one of the most-sought-after-but-hardest-to-find releases in Austrian rock history. And with good reason, because even half a century later, this fabulous melange of beat, garage, pop and psychedelic rock still knows how to thrill its listeners. Wild, weird and full of crazy fun, no Austrian beat record in the Summer of Love has come closer to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

The analogue re-cut for this re-release was taken from the 1967 master tapes, the original sleeve art has been faithfully restored and an extensive and richly illustrated color booklet tells the story of THE BEATNIKS.

1967. Der Summer of Love. Bahnbrechende Alben wie „Surrealistic Pillow“, „The Velvet Underground & Nico“, „Their Satanic Majesties Request“ und natürlich „Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” befreien Millionen junger Leute aus der Knechtschaft des Spießertums, zwingen die leistungsfähigsten Hifi-Lautsprecher gnadenlos in die Knie und stellen die Geschichte der Rockmusik mehrfach auf den Kopf. Danach ist die Welt nicht mehr so wie sie vorher war.

Und was tut sich in Österreich? Marschmusik, Volkslieder, Schlager und handzahme Tanzbands prägen den Sound der Zeit. Nur einige wenige junge Avantgardisten haben sich mit Haut und Haaren dem Rock-N-Roll verschrieben. Von diesen wiederum schaffen es nur die wenigsten aus der Obskurität auf größere Bühnen oder gar in ein Tonstudio.

Die ursprünglich aus Kärnten stammenden Beatniks hingegen haben 1967 als Pioniere der ersten Stunde bereits einige wilde Jahre hinter sich. Seit den frühen 60er-Jahren hat sich die sechsköpfige Combo einen Namen als erstklassige Liveband erarbeitet und gut 1000 Auftritte absolviert. Fixengagements in den heißesten Wiener Clubs und zahlreiche Österreich-Tourneen festigen den hervorragenden Ruf der Gruppe. Bis über die Landesgrenzen hinaus gelten sie als die größte alpenländische Beat-Band. „Das sagen nicht die Beatniks. Das sagen die Kenner.“ stellt das deutsche Pop-Magazin BRAVO diesbezüglich lakonisch fest.

Nachdem es Bandleader Werner Marinell 1966 gelungen war, einen Vertrag mit der Plattenfirma Polydor auszuhandeln folgt nach einigen sehr erfolgreichen Singles der Ritterschlag: die Beatniks erhalten den Auftrag, für das Major-Label eine Langspielplatte mit eigenem Material einzuspielen. Für damalige Verhältnisse eine regelrechte Sensation.

Sensationell ist allerdings auch, was die Band aus dieser Möglichkeit macht. Trotz enormen Zeitdrucks und geringem Budget legen sich die sechs jungen Musiker mächtig ins Zeug und ballern in nur zwei Tagen eine formidable Freakbeat-Granate aufs Tonband.
„On A Blue Day“ wird jedoch leider kein Verkaufsschlager und ist heute eine der am schwersten zu findenden Veröffentlichungen der österreichischen Rockgeschichte. Aber auch ein halbes Jahrhundert später weiß diese fabelhafte Melange aus Beat, Garage, Pop und Psychedelic Rock zu begeistern. Wild, weird und voller aberwitziger Spielfreude ist keine österreichische Beatplatte im Summer of Love näher an „Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band“ herangekommen.

Der Umschnitt für diese Wiederveröffentlichung wurde - 100% analog - vom originalen Mutterband abgenommen. Das Cover wurde detailgetreu restauriert, dazu erzählt ein umfangreiches Booklet die Geschichte der Beatniks, ergänzt um großartiges Bildmaterial aus dem Bandarchiv.
