"Family Noir" Album Release Event: 23.01.2020 @ Chelsea/Vienna

Hey, Rewolfinger, what took you so f***ing long?, mögen interessierte Menschen versucht sein zu fragen, ob der Good News, dass sich ein neues Album dieser in vielerlei Hinsicht speziellen Wiener Band ganz konkret am Horizont abzeichnet. „Far Away“, die letzte Manifestation des weitreichenden Musikverständnisses und dieser als Septett agierenden datiert immerhin schon aus dem fernen Jahr 2010.

Wenn Erwachsene Musik machen, und der Motor dieser Musik überbordende Neigung und heftige Leidenschaft sind, wie dies bei Rewolfinger von jeher der Fall war, wird Zeit allerdings ohnehin relativ. So wie eine große Liebe immer nur der eigenen Zeitrechnung folgt.

Es passt ins Bild, dass die einwöchige Landpartie ins burgendländische Tonstudio auch schon wieder Jahre zurückliegt. Der Mix und das Master brauchten eben ihre Zeit der Reifung, so wie Rewolfinger den 19 Stücken, die das klingende Familienbild jetzt ausmachen, noch das eine oder andere Detail hinzufügen mussten.

„The songs we sing/no, they dont mean a thing/the lyrics they are Schmus/far from the truth“): vom eröffnenden Song „Schmus“ bis hin zum abschließenden „Dark Star“ mit der wunderschönen Zeile „I wish I was a raindrop/dissolving in your tears“ versammelt „Family Noir“ die zwingendsten und gelungensten Rewolfinger-Stücke so far.

Mit einem letzten Tippen an den ausgetragenen Cowboyhut verabschieden sich Rewolfinger von der liebgewonnenen Schubladisierung der Band als schräge Protagonisten ihrer ureigenen Trash-Countrymusik.

Songs wie „Hiding“, „Nobody Pray“, „Time“, „This Way“, „Hangman“, „Cars On Mars“, „Sunday Morning Band“ oder „Lord“ und wie sie noch alle heißen, stehen souverän für sich. Mit dem bewährten Gusto für Unterseiten, Umwege und Brüche
fügen sie sich dabei zu etwas Wunderlichem, ganz und gar Wunderbarem zusammen. Mit der singenden Säge, der Posaune, dem Banjo und dem ganzen anderen glorreichen Instrumentarium (es gibt sogar eine Gast-Tuba!) erweisen sich Rewolfinger als stets unterhaltsame Vermessenr der Human Condition.

Wird die Frau am Cover – vom Wahlwiener Künstler Lutz Bielefeldt nach Anhören der Musik gestaltet – den Truthahn zubereiten, ihn freilassen (ist er noch am Leben?) und warum ist sie barfuß? Womöglich hat „Family Noir“ die Antworten - wenn nicht diese, dann sicher andere.

… music-loving people are tempted to ask, since „Far away“, the last album-release by Vienna’s most original Americana-band, seems so far away in time. It’s been 9 years to be precise, and some things have changed since 2010. Rewolfinger added more personnel to enrichen their musical range. The septett plays a huge variety of instruments like a musical saw, a trombone, a tuba, an accordion and a banjo among so many others.

When musical veterans team up again, still driven by their exuberant passion for a music which is rooted in the past, 9 years may not be that long. And all is forgiven, because those years had not been wasted. „Family noir“ consists of 19 original songs including a few instrumental shorts, and they’re all adding up to Rewolfingers most convincing album so far.

„We are the gun squad and we’re coming to town! Bang Bang“. Being pegged as an alternative, trigger-happy Trash-Country band in the past, Rewolfinger evolved into a matured, well hung panopticon of universal Americana, confident in taste and style. So join these wacky protagonists on their tour de force, explore their musical underbellies and follow them and their sometimes crabwise, sometimes straightforward ways and reward yourself with moments of utmost delight.

A few questions remain, though. What’s the woman on the album sleeve doing with the turkey? Is it dead? Or will it live on to witness another Rewolfinger album in - let’s hope - less than 9 years? I don’t have the answers, but maybe the turkey does. And maybe it’ll share it's knowledge one day in an exclusive for Rewolfingers „Family noir“ e-zine, that will be published along with the album.
