The story of 'Sinner Heart`s Soul Food’ by the Viennese band Krooked Tooth started decades before its release. It all began with a broken violin and a bootlegged Led Zeppelin-tape, leading 12-year-old Emanuel Preuschl to his crossroads: keep on scratching Mozart tunes at Christmas? Or follow the devil and squeeze out your soul on the filthiest stages of the world? No question! Switching to electric guitar opened the door to a parallel world, the world of feedback, fuzz and sweat.
High-energy Freak Blues is the name of the game. To get there it took Emanuel Preuschl and Krooked Tooth some detours. Being ingeniously way-off has always been the quintessence of Rock`n`Roll. On his journey hardcore, metal, ska and hiphop were the weeds that Emanuel picked up from the curbside of the Walk of Fame, to stuff it into his botanizing drum. For later use! With TRAFO, an avant-garde-impro outfit with Daniel Pabst, Chris Janka and Claudius Jelinek, he reached a wider audience for the first time.
Today, with Sebastian Müller on bass and skateboard and Martin Peham on drums, Krooked Tooth are hot as a Brunswick Stew fresh out of the oven. Attention - danger of blisters! Thrilling grooves, fancy basslines and fierce guitars - even the most sluggish of creatures will feel compelled to dance to that mix of high energy teamed up with the roughness of Howlin' Wolf, the passion of Lightnin' Hopkins, the uncompromisingness of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the swamp sound of 'Mississippi' John Hurt - it’s all there.
'Sinner Heart`s Soul Food’ is all about the love for playing the blues, for stretching it, rolling it, waltzing it, banging it against the wall and pressing it until it fits like a glove. But let us not forget Chris Janka, who produced the album like the two albums before. The restriction to the bare essentials and that crisp and direct sound develop an energy will grab the listeners by their ears to pull them along with Krooked Tooth on their rough ride on the curbside to fame, or hell, or else.

Die Story eines lässigen Rock’n’Roll-Albums wie Sinner Heart`s Soul Food von der Wiener Combo Krooked Tooth beginnt nicht 2023, sondern Jahrzehnte vorher. Und zwar mit einer kaputten Geige und dem Eisernen Vorhang. Eine polnische Kassetten-Raubkopie von Led Zeppelin und die zerbrochene Geige stellten den 12-jährigen Emanuel Preuschl vor die alles entscheidende Wegkreuzung eines Musikers: zu Weihnachten im engsten Familienkreis einen Mozart runterkratzen? Oder dem Teufel folgen und für ihn die Seele auf den dreckigen Bühnen der Welt ausquetschen? Keine Frage! Mit dem Wechsel auf E-Gitarre öffnete sich das Tor zu einer Parallelwelt, deren Sound nach Feedback, Fuzz und Tanzschweiß schmeckte.
Schon allein der titelgebende Opener des Albums prescht mit einem Groove, einer geilen Bassline und einer spielwütigen Wildkatze von Gitarre vor, dass sich selbst bräsige Pandabären zum bedingungslosen Abtanzen gezwungen sehen. Um aber auf den hochenergetischen Freak Blues zu kommen, den Emanuel Preuschl mit Krooked Tooth so eigenbrötlerisch wie dynamisch entwickelt hat, brauchte es natürlich einige Umwege. Genial daneben stehen – das war schon immer die Quintessenz des Rock`n`Roll. Und Hardcore, Metall, Ska, Hiphop – das war das Unkraut, das der Sänger und Gitarrist von Krooked Tooth neben dem Walk of Fame aufsammelte und in seine musikalische Botanisiertrommel stopfte. Besonders mit der avantgardistischen Impromusik von TRAFO (Daniel Pabst, Chris Janka, Claudius Jelinek) wurde er einem breiteren Publikum bekannt. Mit Sebastian Müller an Bass und Skateboard und Martin Peham an den groovy Drums sind Krooked Tooth 2023 hot wie ein frisch aus dem Ofen geholter Brunswick Stew. Achtung - Brandblasengefahr!
Im Duett mit Boglárka Bábiczki bekommt die entspannte Liebeserklärung „So good“ einen sexy Twist und bringt Einkochen, Vernaschen und die ursprüngliche Bedeutung von Rock`n`Roll auf einen gemeinsamen Nenner: Love is groovy, stupid. Den Teufel trifft manch einer aber mit ein bisschen Glück zweimal: Die Rauheit, die eines Howlin´ Wolf, die Leidenschaft eines Lightnin´ Hopkins, die Kompromisslosigkeit von Stevie Ray Vaughan und der Swamp Sound von ‘Mississippi' John Hurt machten eines klar: Das Trio steht genau dafür ein - mit derselben Räudigkeit, mit derselben Leidenschaft, mit derselben Kompromisslosigkeit!
Beispiele?„Cooking“ oder „Maliny“: Den Blues lieben und deswegen dehnen, rollen, walken, an die Wand knallen, pressen – bis er passt wie angegossen. Der Swamp Rock von Southern Culture On The Skids lugt um die Ecke. Die Knackigkeit von„Major Taylor“ würden selbst CCR lieben. Zu einem guten Teil ist das auch der Verdienst von Chris Janka, der das Album - wie die beiden Alben davor - produziert hat. Die Beschränkung auf das Notwendigste und ein knallig-direkter Sound entwickeln eine Energie, die die Zuhörer packt und mitreißt auf eine rumpelige Abzweigung zum Highway To Hell. Auf Sinner Heart`s Soul Food spielen sich Krooked Tooth den Teufel aus dem Leib – ein höllisch gutes Album!
